We chat with Supernatural: The Official Companion author Nicholas Knight about the hit TV show, including his favourite episode,  and of course the Chevy Impala...

1. What can readers expect to find in Supernatural: The Official Companion Season 2?

Since I’m sure the readers will all have had the excellent taste and foresight to have read Supernatural: The Official Companion Season 1 first, they can expect to find more of the same:  exclusive behind-the-scenes anecdotes, never-before-asked questions answered by cast and crew, true tales of the cast and crew’s encounters with the supernatural, intriguing trivia, character profiles, and a complete episode guide. Not to mention fun new features like “Supernatural Ghost Rules” and “22 Helpful Hints for Aspiring Monster Hunters” by Dean Winchester.

2. Did you approach writing the Second Companion in the same way as the first?

Actually, I did. I was quite happy with the way the first book turned out, so I didn’t want to mess with success, so to speak. Probably the only thing I did differently was that I made a more conscious effort to make sure I had lots of quotes for all the episodes (because when I wrote the first book I found that the same episodes were talked about the most). And I tried to interview even more people, which was both fun and challenging.

3. Which is your favorite creature that the Winchester Brothers have faced in the show?

This is the type of question I always ask people when I’m the interviewer, but as the interviewee, it’s an incredibly difficult question to answer…because I like so many of the creatures! Seriously. Maybe even more so than most fans because of the time I spent studying what made them uniquely Supernatural monsters when writing the “A Closer Look At” features for the companions. But I rarely accepted “I can’t decide” as an answer, so I won’t leave you with that, either. I’d have to say that Bloody Mary is my favorite. She can stalk you through any reflective surface and she makes your eyes bleed. Scary!

4. Do you have any interesting stories from the filming of Supernatural?

I find the entire production process interesting and have been privileged to witness many memorable scenes being filmed, but everyone was always friendly, enthusiastic, and professional; there was no prima donna behavior, no blooper-worthy mistakes, and (despite rumors to the contrary) I have yet to fall victim to the notorious pranksters.

5. The Chevy Impala is often given as much attention as the Brothers themselves and creator Eric Kripke describes it as a character. What do you think is the appeal of this car?

There’s not enough space here to psychoanalyze why people, especially men, love muscle cars, but there’s definitely something extra special about the brothers’ Impala. And I think a lot of that stems from the fact that its trunk is big enough to fit a corpse in, while still leaving room for the boys’ clothes and their unbelievably awesome weapons cache.

6. Can you sum up the appeal of Supernatural?

Let me put it this way: What’s not to like? Seriously…you’ve got action, adventure, scares, laughs, and family drama in every single episode. There’s no other show that can provide that much entertainment punch week in and week out. Not to mention that everything about the show from the writing to the acting to the production values is topnotch.

7. Do you have any favorite episodes?

This is even harder than the favorite creature question! ‘Bloody Mary’ is definitely high up there, as are ‘Skin’ and ‘Tall Tales’, but I’d have to say my favorites are ‘The Pilot’ and ‘All Hell Breaks Loose’ for starting and finishing an enthralling story arc.

8. In homage to the question you asked in the back of the first Companion, do you believe in the supernatural?

I knew that question would come back to haunt me! (Pun intended.) I believe in the supernatural in the same way that I believe in life on other planets: the universe is so vast that I’d find it harder to believe that there’s nothing else out there. But if the legends on which Supernatural is based are to be believed, there are things all around us that I’d rather not encounter...
